Death is tough enough. It's probably one of the toughest things as human beings we must face at one point or another in life. But it's even worse when someone you love becomes the victim of it. For young Laura this was all too real.

Once under her mother's name Laura Kinney, she had now changed it to Laura Howlett, so she could carry the same last name as her father. Her father the Wolverine. Years had passed since Logan had been killed, and the world was not any friendlier because of it. Laura had found her way to Eden among the other children, and they were kept safe there for many years until they became adults able to look after themselves.

However when Laura got old enough, she left and did lots of travelling, well more like drifting, since her father was a drifter and never really stayed in one place at a time. The year was now 2059 Laura had grown quite beautiful, but she still appeared the same way she did as a child.

Her beautiful china face, her long dark hair flowing freely in the wind, and she had a beautiful figure which fit nicely into a lot of her black outfits that she wore, mainly her Harley Davidson wardrobe.

After Laura left Eden many years ago, she traveled back toward the Mexican border where she had grown up many years before.

It was difficult to forget about Logan after all of those years, and Laura had never forgotten him once. When she first arrived at Eden she was still consumed by unforgiving sadness.

Thoughts of Logan's dying face haunted her every night in her dreams, and it took her almost the rest of the year to move past all of it.

Her friends had been a big help of course, as they all knew that Logan was indeed her father, and they all owed him a lot of gratitude. Logan, once a reluctant and mean grumpy old man who had no business helping children at all, turned around and chose to save these children who would lead new life into the future.

But of course with every choice, there comes a price. Logan's life was that price. So the children had walked away into a future, no longer knowing what it held.

Laura followed in Logan's footsteps a little while after returning back over the border into Mexico. She started helping other mutant child refugees, by getting them to escape over the border to Eden just like she had done as a child.

She had also scouted out other parts of the forest, finding numerous ways to get around and find a new direct path, since many times before they had been caught by members of the military, who managed to slaughter a few children, before Laura helped the others get away.

Drifting back and forth between homes, Laura found meaning in her life by being a hero, but she also felt the loss of something in her life.

Truth be told she was exactly like her father, and preferred to be a loner most of the time, avoiding such things as boyfriends, or seriously committed relationships.

As for family, all she had were her friends from Eden who followed her that day, she had no parents, and no other family that she knew of.

Laura was also very good at avoiding things in life that she didn't like, and whenever the thought of an X shaped graveside came into her mind, she shook her thoughts of it away.

Laura had followed her life in the exact way that Logan had wanted her to live it. 'Don't be what they made you'.

One of the last things he had said to her.

She hadn't visited his graveside in years, and all she had to remember him by were his dog tags with his name on them, some old photographs, and even her sunglasses, the pair she had stolen when she was twelve from the gas station.

She laughed at the memory of Logan grabbing her by the wrist and scolding her for trying to steal, just the way a real father would scold a child.

But life was being so slow for her now, and she couldn't avoid it forever. So after going to a small flower shop in Mexico city, she purchased a pair of low cost flowers that were not that fancy, but seemed colorful and appropriate enough to be placed at a graveside.

She slowly made her way through the forest, stepping over various broken branches, and avoiding large gopher holes.

She knew the way somehow, even though it had been years since she had paid her respects at Logan's graveside once again.

Her feet stopped and remained glued to the ground as she finally saw a familiar X shaped marker sticking out of the ground. Sucking in a large breath, she walked closer to the small spot, placing her flowers delicately on top of the enormous rock pile.

Logan had been buried under the various rocks, since way back then the children had no other way of burying him, and Laura couldn't just leave him lying against the broken tree for all eternity.

She cleared her throat, before parting her lips to speak. "Hi daddy" was how she started. barely a soft whisper, but loud enough for her own ears to catch what she had said.

"I know I haven't been here in a very long time...." she trailed off unaware of what else to say, as she felt tears beginning to burn from the bottom of her eyes. She sucked in another breath trying to calm her heartbeat which now seemed to be bouncing in her ears.

"I know that I let you down by not coming here much sooner and I'm sorry for that. I've lived my life the way you've wanted me to do so. I'm not the weapon that they wanted me to be. If I fight, it's only to protect others like you did.

I save lots of kids now, and I help them get across the border to Eden where I know they will be safe. I know I've got lots of friends, but I miss the idea of having a family. I never got to know my mom all that well, and we were only together for a short time you and me..."

Laura paused as a small tear trickled out of her eye, and landed on one of Logan's rocks just below her feet.

"What I'm trying to say is... is that I love you daddy" she said gently to the large rock pile.

She leaned down, before placing her hand on the cold surface, feeling the strength of the rocks in her palm. She appreciated nature just like Logan.

The memory came back to her crystal clear now, as the tears fell onto the rocks below her.

"G-Go. Take your friends and run" Logan said gasping like a fish out of water. Laura kept shaking her head no in protest, not wanting to leave him to suffer. "They'll keep coming and coming, so you don't have to fight anymore" he whispered, rasping between each breath.

Logan laid there silently for a moment, the sticky feeling of the blood from his wound was bothering him less and less now, as his mind was more focused on Laura. He studied the little girl's face with what appeared to be some sort of curiosity. He was now just noticing what a beautiful child she was.

He studied her face closely watching her tears slowly fall from her face, as he felt them land softly on his skin.

Laura squeezed Logan's large hand tightly inside of her smaller one, trying desperately to comfort him.

Logan was not very good at comforting people most times, he could be prickly most of the time, rude and unkind to most people. It wasn't his fault though really, he just didn't trust people as well as he used to, not after everything that had happened to him in his life.

But he now finally had come to terms with one thing. This was HIS daughter. His flesh and blood.

Now at his dying point, he finally realized how much he truly loved her, and how much she truly loved him back, so the least he could do was comfort her in some way.

However, his breathing was becoming more and more labored, so he just smiled softly and turned to Laura, and gently said her name. "Laura...Laura" he whispered softly, smiling at her, trying to get her to stop crying.

"Daddy" she cried softly, just as Logan's grip in her hand was starting to loosen. Logan's smile widened as he remembered what Charles had said before about this is what it feels like to love someone, and how this is what life looks like.

"So, so this is what it feels like" he smiled gently, just as Laura's face became a distant shadow, and the last of his life drained out of him.

"NO!!" Laura wailed as more tears spilled over. She shook her head in denial, trying to gently shake Logan awake, but it was too late. She sensed no life from him. "Daddy!" she cried again, just as the other children watched in sorrow at the sad scene before them.

Laura opened her eyes to see the damp rocks below her, just as she realized that she had done a lot more crying then she had intended to. She rested her head against the rock pile, before sliding her body down next to it, hugging it tightly with all her might, before she fell asleep.

When she awoke it was the next morning. She stayed with her father all night long, and somehow it made her feel much happier on the inside to know that she protected him throughout the night. She picked up Logan's dog tags off of his rocky grave, and placed them back around her neck once again, sniffling and releasing whatever tears she had left out of her eyes.

"Goodbye daddy. I'll be back again soon" Laura said, gently kissing her fingers, and placing them back against the rocks, feeling their cool smooth surfaces, before leaving the forest, and heading back to where she belonged.

But this was not the end of the chapter, oh no just the opposite. She would keep her promise and continue to fight for what was right, she would be like her father.

After all, X marks an X Men.
Another fan fiction about Laura Kinney (AKA X 23) the daughter of Wolverine. Still inspired after seeing Logan! Please enjoy the story. I do not own Logan.
